Well, being nice can sometimes hurt the other person as mush as yourself. If you don't tell them to back of, then they don't know if you like them or not. Then they wont give up on you but instead hoping for the existance of a relationship between you two.
Holding on to feelings of a person can chew on your inside and it hurts even more the longer it takes.
